Design and Construction Contract Awarded for Smithfield Bypass
Congratulations to CCF QLD member, Albem Operations Pty Ltd and CCF WA member, Highway Construction on being awarded the design and construction contract for the Smithfield Bypass project. Construction on the Far North Queensland based $152 million infrastructure project will begin in late 2018 with works due to finish in late 2020, weather permitting.
The development of this major infrastructure project will support commuters along the Captain Cook Highway. By directing through traffic onto the new bypass road, local motorists can expect to see improve driver safety, better traffic conditions and less congestion. The Smithfield Bypass project will support growth and increased productivity for Far North Queensland’s economy. Throughout the construction period, the Smithfield Bypass project will support 115 full-time jobs.
The Queensland Government tendering process focuses on engagement with the local workforce and businesses. The Smithfield Bypass project is one of three significant road projects improving roads and vehicle access in the Far North. Construction of Stage 4 of the Kate Street to Aumuller Street project is expected to start in late August 2018. In addition, construction of the Bruce Highway – Cairns Southern Access Corridor – Stage 3: Edmonton to Gordonvale highway duplication is expected to start late 2019. These major infrastructure projects will support Cairns-based civil construction businesses to get involved in the near future.
